cheers to all the mamas

As mothers to two daughters each (including two in middle school), Farrah and I confess that we often feel like we're in the thick of it. Motherhood is a joyful blessing that seems to simultaneously reveal our strengths, as well as our weaknesses and shortcomings. We're reminded of a favorite passage below from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Thank you to our own mothers, Janice and Marilyn, who have shown so much love and encouragement over the years. You have provided the very best examples for your girls to copy, and we hope to be half as good as you! "...I[...]

cultivating a “heart at peace”

After stepping away for a bit, we're getting back to it at The Roost. Truth be told, Farrah and I have been wrestling with how to share content that may appear frivolous in light of these heavy times. In the span of a couple weeks, it seems the world has transitioned out of a global pandemic into a full-blown international conflict.  It's heartbreaking to see so many innocent people, especially children, caught in the cross hairs of war. We're praying for peace and better days ahead. We're also reminding ourselves that it's precisely times like these that we need[...]

five little things that are bringing me joy

We often think that it's the really big things in life that bring the most happiness and satisfaction. A new job, a new house, a new relationship, a new trip...For sure, all of these do matter and they undoubtedly impact our emotional well being. However, the older I get, the more I'm realizing the power of "little things" to significantly enhance my mood and the quality of my days. In an effort to celebrate the tiny moments that add up and contribute to an overall sense of joy and contentment, we've decided to take turns sharing the small stuff. From the meaning[...]

Tea for Two and Two for Tea

Charleston, SC

Despite being married to a tea-drinking Englishman, I haven't visited many tea rooms in my life with the exception of a few times in Europe. After an afternoon at the museum, taking in a film, or shopping, nothing seemed more appealing than tea with friends on a cold winter's day. Last November on a family trip to Italy, I rediscovered the charm of sitting down to a proper tea and knew that I'd like to try to recreate that special experience at home. On that day in Italy, I recall that we'd been so[...]

A Season to bloom: takeaways from the southern C Summit

Sea Island, GA

If you've been following along on Instagram, you may have seen that Lori and I ventured off for a little field trip to Sea Island, Georgia last week. We were thrilled to attend the Southern Coterie's annual Summit conference at The Cloister, and can’t remember the last time we learned so much in three days! For more than a decade, the "Southern C" has provided a network for female creatives and entrepreneurs in the South and beyond. Founders Cheri Leavy and Whitney Long have done an amazing job bringing together a supportive community of women that value conn[...]

Joy in January

Charleston, SC

Being joyful in January might seem like an exaggeration or an impossible feat for some - I definitely catch myself falling into that category. Between the round up of illnesses coming through our house, the gloomy skies and cold temperatures, I have to make a conscious decision each day to stay positive and look for the little perks to keep my outlook upbeat. Here are the six things I've done to try and make January memorable instead of mopey. Meditation I'm using the Simply Being App for 5 minutes, 3 times a day. Some days I’ve managed three times a d[...]

California Dreaming

San Diego, California

Planning a family trip can be tricky these days. Like many people, we've had a few getaways derailed because of Covid. With our girls at different schools, they have different Spring Breaks. What's more, my work as a realtor makes it difficult to be away during March and April when the real estate market tends to heat up. For these reasons, my husband and I recently decided to take advantage of time off over the holidays and take the family to California. We arrived the day after Christmas and enjoyed our time in the Golden State through New Years Day.  [...]
