feels like fall: little things to elevate the season

We're coming off the most gorgeous weekend in Charleston, reminding me why autumn is a favorite time of year in the Lowcountry. I also love the mental reset associated with back-to-school and new fall rhythms. I'm finding myself in the kitchen more these days, trying out new recipes and cooking up old family favorites (like the pumpkin chili below). I've also slipped into a more consistent workout routine over the last few weeks. I've been enjoying my usual neighborhood run, along with (new to me) Pilates classes. Finally, I've entered a season of seeking. I've b[...]

summer love: five little things that are bringing me joy

I'm back with another "five little things" post to share some of the small stuff that's been making me smile lately. Inspiration for this summery post struck at our recent book club meeting.  In addition to selecting a book to read and discuss, we've taken to occasionally swapping our favorite things centered around a theme. It's so much fun to discover the unexpected items that your friends are passionate about! I walked away from our little "summer favorites" exchange with the absolute best strapless bra to wear with my sundresses (thanks, Kaina!), and I'm incl[...]

cultivating gratitude with farin doran

It happens every May. The summer illusion sets in, and I foolishly believe I'll be able to slow down and savor the season while using the longer days to catch up on every facet of my life. Big surprise--it ain't happening! Travel, house guests, kids out of school and the Charleston humidity have all made sticking to a writing and posting schedule more challenging than imagined. What can I say? We're working on our consistency at The Roost.  Plus, I've got a new post today that I hope you'll agree was worth the wait! I'm excited to bring you another Open Book co[...]

cheers to all the mamas

As mothers to two daughters each (including two in middle school), Farrah and I confess that we often feel like we're in the thick of it. Motherhood is a joyful blessing that seems to simultaneously reveal our strengths, as well as our weaknesses and shortcomings. We're reminded of a favorite passage below from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Thank you to our own mothers, Janice and Marilyn, who have shown so much love and encouragement over the years. You have provided the very best examples for your girls to copy, and we hope to be half as good as you! "...I[...]

five little things that are bringing me joy

We often think that it's the really big things in life that bring the most happiness and satisfaction. A new job, a new house, a new relationship, a new trip...For sure, all of these do matter and they undoubtedly impact our emotional well being. However, the older I get, the more I'm realizing the power of "little things" to significantly enhance my mood and the quality of my days. In an effort to celebrate the tiny moments that add up and contribute to an overall sense of joy and contentment, we've decided to take turns sharing the small stuff. From the meaning[...]

lovely finds for valentine’s day

"When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed." -Maya Angelou Of the five love languages, gifts might be my favorite. I certainly enjoyed compiling this wish list of Valentine's-inspired finds (and made sure to share it with my husband). I hope that it gives you some lovely ideas for yourself, your mom, sister or best friend. From beauty items to home goods, I've rounded up more than a few dozen gems at various price points to strike your fancy.   While true joy will never be found in things, it's always nice to treat yourself or a[...]

making self-care A PRIORITY

For the longest time, I was a self-care skeptic. Apart from the occasional trip to the salon, I didn't think I needed it. Self-care seemed like an indulgence for those who could afford to splurge on massages, facials, and afternoon naps.  After my daughters were born, the little time I had for such frivolities whittled down to just enough to shower and brush my teeth. So what's changed? I guess growing older (and hopefully wiser) has me seeking opportunities to relax and recharge. Maybe it's a way to combat the winter doldrums or a coping mechanism for what seems[...]
