Five things bringing me joy this fall

Charleston, South Carolina

As I rounded the corner into September, it took me a little while to find my way into a new routine. I almost felt like it was January and I had the "post-Christmas blues." I was definitely missing summer. But after thinking about it, I realized I actually felt overloaded by my children's new school year routine. In years past, I didn't feel that overwhelmed by the amount of scheduled time. But this year was another level. And it was an abrupt change to my rhythm. So with a little thought I tried to jump-start myself into a positive place. I could do my best to ma[...]

inside the 2022 cashiers designer showhouse

Last Friday, Farrah and I did something that felt a little indulgent. After dropping our girls at school and kissing our husbands goodbye, we packed up the car and headed to the mountains for a weekend of relaxation, spa treatments and design. It felt wonderful to unplug for a bit and soak up the mountain air, along with lots of inspiration at the Cashiers Designer Showhouse. 25th Annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse Located in the prestigious High Hampton community, the 25th Annual Showhouse was presented by the Cashiers Historical Society with[...]

Outward bound – a trip to yellowstone

Big Sky, Montana

Traveling this summer my family journeyed to Yellowstone for one week. As you might expect, there were numerous activities at our fingertips. Hiking, visiting landmarks, swimming, fishing, rafting, or just relaxing and enjoying the phenomenal view.  Montana is not short on beautiful scenery - in fact you can’t escape it. But the one aspect that really had me thinking about national parks was how unique it is to visit in 2022 a place that is preserved and protected. You’re visiting an area that in large part is untouched by humanity compared to the rest of th[...]

Summer Reading: highs + lows

Farrah has written about this in the past, but I also find joy in reading and prefer escaping in a book to watching the latest show on Netflix. Compiling a summer reading list is even one of my nerdy, little pleasures. Each year I try to jot down at least a handful of books I'd like to be able to check off by the time September rolls around.  Now that it's August (and my kids are back in school), I'm reviewing my list and trying to make more room in my schedule for this favorite pastime. Here's a look at what I've been reading this summer, including the highs an[...]

summer love: five little things that are bringing me joy

I'm back with another "five little things" post to share some of the small stuff that's been making me smile lately. Inspiration for this summery post struck at our recent book club meeting.  In addition to selecting a book to read and discuss, we've taken to occasionally swapping our favorite things centered around a theme. It's so much fun to discover the unexpected items that your friends are passionate about! I walked away from our little "summer favorites" exchange with the absolute best strapless bra to wear with my sundresses (thanks, Kaina!), and I'm incl[...]

cultivating gratitude with farin doran

It happens every May. The summer illusion sets in, and I foolishly believe I'll be able to slow down and savor the season while using the longer days to catch up on every facet of my life. Big surprise--it ain't happening! Travel, house guests, kids out of school and the Charleston humidity have all made sticking to a writing and posting schedule more challenging than imagined. What can I say? We're working on our consistency at The Roost.  Plus, I've got a new post today that I hope you'll agree was worth the wait! I'm excited to bring you another Open Book co[...]

cheers to all the mamas

As mothers to two daughters each (including two in middle school), Farrah and I confess that we often feel like we're in the thick of it. Motherhood is a joyful blessing that seems to simultaneously reveal our strengths, as well as our weaknesses and shortcomings. We're reminded of a favorite passage below from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Thank you to our own mothers, Janice and Marilyn, who have shown so much love and encouragement over the years. You have provided the very best examples for your girls to copy, and we hope to be half as good as you! "...I[...]
