New coffee table books for design lovers

Give me a beautiful design book, and I will happily while away a Saturday morning pouring over pages of glossy interiors. From striking architecture and perfectly-arranged floor plans to hand-painted wallpapers and chintz-covered fabrics, I enjoy studying these elements and analyzing what it is that really makes a space sing. Time and again, I find myself returning to favorite books to draw inspiration when I'm decorating a new space or looking to make a change in my own home.  There are so many amazing design books out this fall th[...]

Ten easy ways to elevate your space

If you've ever put your house on the market, you know the rush of activity that goes into making certain it presents well. After all the repairs and upgrades, I recall wishing we wouldn't have waited until we were selling the place to make those improvements. A few weekends’ worth of elbow grease and minor adjustments made such a difference in the way our previous home felt and functioned.Although we're not intending to sell our current abode any time soon, something about the new year has me feeling inspired to take stock of these four walls and make a punch li[...]

Mood lighting: chic options to cast a glow

Autumn's shorter days and chilly nights have us wanting to make our homes especially cozy this time of year.  It may seem strange, but one of my little joys is walking through the house each evening to switch on the lamps or light a few candles to offset the earlier sunsets. Soft lamplight (as opposed to harsh overhead lighting) makes such a difference in the way a home feels. It's an easy trick to create ambiance, along with flickering candlelight of course. For an instant dose of warmth, consider adding a pretty lamp to a console or counter top. Or, perhaps in[...]

designer sarah bartholomew Brings a dose of springtime to a classic, georgian-style home

Extended daylight hours, birds chirping happily and a layer of pollen coating every outdoor surface must mean that spring has officially arrived in Charleston! Apart from the allergies, I do love this time of year and am looking forward to consistently warm weather and all that the season has to offer. It's about this time that I also get the urge to lighten up our home by bringing in fresh flowers, green plants and brighter colors. The other day, I stumbled across an old issue of Traditional Home magazine that provided lots of inspiration, while reminding me jus[...]

Christmastime in charleston

I've got a confession. I'm more than a little behind on Christmas prep and my house is an absolute wreck. For the last week or so, our half-decorated tree has stood in the family room corner looking forlorn, along with half a dozen storage bins filled with wreaths and garland waiting to be fluffed. December has gotten off to a busy start and there's been a number of work and social events, causing me to lose some of the steam I had when we first pulled everything down from the attic. Regardless, I'm determined to have our house decorated by the end of the day! The[...]
