feels like fall: little things to elevate the season

We're coming off the most gorgeous weekend in Charleston, reminding me why autumn is a favorite time of year in the Lowcountry. I also love the mental reset associated with back-to-school and new fall rhythms. I'm finding myself in the kitchen more these days, trying out new recipes and cooking up old family favorites (like the pumpkin chili below). I've also slipped into a more consistent workout routine over the last few weeks. I've been enjoying my usual neighborhood run, along with (new to me) Pilates classes. Finally, I've entered a season of seeking. I've b[...]

fall baking with apples

Beginning in September right through the holidays, our mixers and ovens go into overdrive. While baking can be therapeutic any time of year, a warm kitchen and homemade goodies are especially comforting when the leaves are falling or when holiday music is playing in the background.Whether you're looking for a quick breakfast to serve house guests or a tasty treat to enjoy while decorating the tree--we've got two seasonal recipes for you that are easy and delicious! Both require ingredients that you likely have on-hand or can readily find in most grocery stores thi[...]

spooky fall reading

Are you someone who enjoys curling up with a haunting mystery or suspenseful thriller this time of year? While my threshold for scary books and movies isn't what it used to be, I still enjoy losing myself in a good story. Plus, I thought it might be fun to put together a "fall reading list" for those of you who don't mind goosebumps and sleeping with the lights on. The following titles range from the slightly mysterious to the downright creepy. I'm also including a few spooky classics I think everyone should read at least once. Happy reading![...]

Mood lighting: chic options to cast a glow

Autumn's shorter days and chilly nights have us wanting to make our homes especially cozy this time of year.  It may seem strange, but one of my little joys is walking through the house each evening to switch on the lamps or light a few candles to offset the earlier sunsets. Soft lamplight (as opposed to harsh overhead lighting) makes such a difference in the way a home feels. It's an easy trick to create ambiance, along with flickering candlelight of course. For an instant dose of warmth, consider adding a pretty lamp to a console or counter top. Or, perhaps in[...]

Five things bringing me joy this fall

Charleston, South Carolina

As I rounded the corner into September, it took me a little while to find my way into a new routine. I almost felt like it was January and I had the "post-Christmas blues." I was definitely missing summer. But after thinking about it, I realized I actually felt overloaded by my children's new school year routine. In years past, I didn't feel that overwhelmed by the amount of scheduled time. But this year was another level. And it was an abrupt change to my rhythm. So with a little thought I tried to jump-start myself into a positive place. I could do my best to ma[...]

Fall floral arrangements for your thanksgiving celebrations

While you’re running through the grocery store for the third time the week before Thanksgiving (we will be, too!), you might have time to stop briefly at the flower counter and grab a few stems to spice up your home for the occasion. Whether it’s a beautiful centerpiece for your entry or buffet, or some thoughtfully placed votive-sized arrangements, it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to make a big impact. The arrangements we make in the video are fairly easy to compose, but still add elegance to any table or counter-top. Here are a few tips to keep in mind[...]

FAVORITE FALL FRAGRANCES

Of all the five senses, scent has the strongest link to memory and can conjure up feelings of nostalgia. To this day, the musky-sweet smell of fallen leaves takes me back to childhood autumns when crisp, fall days were meant for jumping in leaf piles and taking walks in the nearby woods. In addition to bringing back fond memories, fragrance is one of those little pleasures that enhances my mood. Wearing a beautiful perfume seems to elevate even the most mundane tasks and routines. Likewise, fragrances for the home create an atmosphere that I find particularly n[...]
