RAISE THE BAR: ideas for easy entertaining at home

It's the weekend, and we've got a fun little post for you about entertaining at home. These days I'm inclined to favor a night in versus trekking downtown to a fancy restaurant. Hosting friends and family from the comfort of home seems way more personal and relaxed to me, and it's a joy to extend a bit of old-fashioned hospitality.Whether hosting a crowd or a more intimate gathering, it's helpful to designate a space for setting up everything from drinks to charcuterie. Today I'm sharing a glimpse at one of my recent home projects, along with a few creative ideas[...]

A gorgeous book to inspire your next celebration

As a longtime admirer of James T. Farmer's aesthetic, I happily added his newest book to my collection. Celebrating Home A Time For Every Season has got to be one of the prettiest entertaining books I've seen in a long time. Arranged by seasonal gatherings, each chapter begins with a lovely watercolor invitation and often a sentimental poem to mark the occasion. I found myself slowly turning the pages to take in the gorgeous photography. (The images below were photographed by Emily Followill, and taken from my copy of Farmer's book.)[...]

hosting a vintage murder mystery dinner party

Party games, dressing up and acting ridiculous might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly is mine! My parents know this about me, and thoughtfully presented this murder mystery game from Talking Tables last Christmas. It took a while to finally pull it off, but my husband and I (a.k.a. Carey Baggs and Ali Abord) hosted a 1930's-themed get-together the other weekend, and I can't remember the last time we laughed so much!"Murder on the European Belle Night Train" offered a fun twist on a traditional dinner party, giving everyone an opportunity to dress up[...]

festive poinsettia punch

Charleston, SC

Just in time for the weekend, Lori and I have a beautiful and delicious cocktail to bring you an extra dose of Christmas cheer. A little jazz playing in the background, a cocktail (or mocktail) in hand, and good company is a great way to spread some holiday joy. This punch is simple to make and will create that little wow factor that we relish this time of year.  FESTIVE POINSETTIA PUNCH Makes 8 servings Ingredients: 1/2 cup orange liqueur 1 cup cranberry juice cocktail Top off with sparkling wine (we use Balan Millesimato Brut Prosecco)  Ga[...]

Prepping for out-of-town guests

'Tis the season for welcoming friends and family from afar! After nearly two years of limited travel and gatherings, most of us are ready to fling open our homes and host out-of-town guests.  While I'm thrilled to have visitors once again, there's no denying that our guest room suffered a bit of neglect during the pandemic. The space collected more than dust, accumulating all sorts of random objects, clothing donations and a few unfinished projects. Thankfully, I had my mother-in-law's visit to spur me into action a few weeks ago. Our degenerate guest room re[...]

Fall floral arrangements for your thanksgiving celebrations

While you’re running through the grocery store for the third time the week before Thanksgiving (we will be, too!), you might have time to stop briefly at the flower counter and grab a few stems to spice up your home for the occasion. Whether it’s a beautiful centerpiece for your entry or buffet, or some thoughtfully placed votive-sized arrangements, it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to make a big impact. The arrangements we make in the video are fairly easy to compose, but still add elegance to any table or counter-top. Here are a few tips to keep in mind[...]
