A few years back when my husband and I were in the beginning stages of designing our home, I must have spent hours pouring over interior design books and magazines, trying to pinpoint the exact style we were going for and identify commonalities in the rooms that stopped me in my tracks. I realized that the spaces I’m most drawn to often incorporate hand-blocked, Indian textiles and wallpapers.
While I ‘m definitely not an expert, I don’t think you have to be one in order to appreciate the international flair that block print materials add to a space. The tradition of block print goes back some 4,000 years and is thought to have originated in China before spreading throughout Asia and, most noticeably, India. Interestingly, the process of authentic block printing hasn’t changed all that much over the years. This House Beautiful article offers a great historical review of the art form that continues to shape design and home decor trends today.
I love how the use of block print adds a layered quality to these gorgeous rooms by designers Lisa Fine, Ashley Whittaker, Mark D. Sikes and Amanda Lindroth.
Table linens, wallpaper and lampshades are three easy ways to bring this enduring art form into your home. See below for some ideas and inspiration.
