a few of my favorite things + remembering A Good Dog

Can you believe Easter is right around the corner? Last week's time change kind of sneaked up on me, but the warm weather and extra hour of sunshine more than compensated for any lingering fatigue. Tom and I have made daytime dates an occasional habit, and the spring weather was the perfect excuse for an impromptu cruise around Charleston Harbor. From boat rides to clean beauty, today I'm sharing an assortment of little things that have been filling my cup lately.  Speaking of cups...the trendy Ember Mug tops my list. I original[...]

feels like fall: little things to elevate the season

We're coming off the most gorgeous weekend in Charleston, reminding me why autumn is a favorite time of year in the Lowcountry. I also love the mental reset associated with back-to-school and new fall rhythms. I'm finding myself in the kitchen more these days, trying out new recipes and cooking up old family favorites (like the pumpkin chili below). I've also slipped into a more consistent workout routine over the last few weeks. I've been enjoying my usual neighborhood run, along with (new to me) Pilates classes. Finally, I've entered a season of seeking. I've b[...]

Five things bringing me joy this fall

Charleston, South Carolina

As I rounded the corner into September, it took me a little while to find my way into a new routine. I almost felt like it was January and I had the "post-Christmas blues." I was definitely missing summer. But after thinking about it, I realized I actually felt overloaded by my children's new school year routine. In years past, I didn't feel that overwhelmed by the amount of scheduled time. But this year was another level. And it was an abrupt change to my rhythm. So with a little thought I tried to jump-start myself into a positive place. I could do my best to ma[...]

Planning a kitchen garden

I grew up in rural Pennsylvania surrounded by rolling hills and some of the most beautiful farmland imaginable. The prevalence of fresh produce meant that mealtimes often included fruits and vegetables from our local orchard or from one of many roadside farm stands. We also had the kindest neighbor, dear Mr. Trout, who could be counted on to drop by with a basket of surplus tomatoes or cantaloupes from his garden. To this day, I don't think anything tastes better than a sun-warmed, fresh-from-the-garden, tomato slice with a pinch of salt![...]
