cultivating a “heart at peace”

After stepping away for a bit, we're getting back to it at The Roost. Truth be told, Farrah and I have been wrestling with how to share content that may appear frivolous in light of these heavy times. In the span of a couple weeks, it seems the world has transitioned out of a global pandemic into a full-blown international conflict.  It's heartbreaking to see so many innocent people, especially children, caught in the cross hairs of war. We're praying for peace and better days ahead. We're also reminding ourselves that it's precisely times like these that we need[...]

five little things that are bringing me joy

We often think that it's the really big things in life that bring the most happiness and satisfaction. A new job, a new house, a new relationship, a new trip...For sure, all of these do matter and they undoubtedly impact our emotional well being. However, the older I get, the more I'm realizing the power of "little things" to significantly enhance my mood and the quality of my days. In an effort to celebrate the tiny moments that add up and contribute to an overall sense of joy and contentment, we've decided to take turns sharing the small stuff. From the meaning[...]

the enduring allure of agatha christie

More than 100 years after she published her first novel, Agatha Christie is having a moment! As someone who read every detective story she could get her hands on growing up, I couldn't be happier to see one of my favorite authors in the spotlight. In addition to a new movie adaptation of Christie's Death on the Nile, I've been pleased to see a couple books debut that explore the life and genuine mystery surrounding Agatha herself. The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie BenedictFarrah and I had the opportunity to meet author Marie Benedict at a Charleston Library[...]

Author Spotlight: Amor Towles + A Review Of The Lincoln Highway

Charleston, SC

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers." Charles W. Eliot Reading has always brought me the purest form of joy. As a kid, I spent endless hours binge-reading whatever series I was into that year. My nightstand remains a constant witness to my love affair with reading.  It is permanently weighed down by books and magazines (yes, I still subscribe to a few!) I really enjoy being part of a book club and appreciate reading the variety of books other book c[...]

Christmas Books to lift the holiday spirit

Charleston, SC

The lead up to Christmas can often become hectic and over-scheduled. We all know the epicenter of the holiday season is family and friends, but the amount of commitments can often lead us to feeling stressed and anxious. Lori and I both occasionally like to retreat and recharge with our nose stuck in a book. We’ve put together a list of book recommendations to spread some Christmas cheer (and give you some much needed escapism). Whether you love a classic, historical fiction or a rom-com, we’ve got a book for you. You might even discover a great gift for a fel[...]

A Must-have coffee table book for rattan lovers + WAYS TO BRING this timeless material into your home

Charleston, SC

Open any shelter magazine and you'll find bamboo, wicker and rattan furniture and accessories adding warmth and texture to homes of various styles and in locales ranging from mountains to beaches and everywhere in between. While rattan is certainly on trend, it’s also true that decorating with woven and natural materials has been en vogue for decades. My feelings about rattan as a mainstay in traditional decorating were reinforced by Lulu Lytle’s book Rattan A World of Elegance and Charm. I also came away feeling that I can confidently select “Rattan for $1,[...]

WHAT I’M READING

Charleston, SC

Whether it’s to relax or purely out of interest in the book’s subject, reading is a pastime that never fails to bring me joy. I rarely read more than two books at a time. I like historical fiction and action/adventure, but I often throw in a random genre like romance or science fiction if it’s a great story. For me, an amazing book can pull me into its pages and I’m transported to another life. Pure escapism. In the last year, I’ve yo-yo’d between being so busy I didn’t read for 3 months to reading a book every 3 days. I’ve always had this weird[...]
