While traveling this summer to Italy, I found myself thinking about how I could bring some of my favorite inspirations home. Charleston, like many U.S. cities, has European influences. But when we venture abroad the full immersion in a new culture makes the experience really special. As I was photographing some of my favorite meals, textiles and decor, I knew with a little effort I could extend the experience at home by trying to replicate some of my favorite moments.
The whimsy and cultural differences I’ve experienced while traveling can be so revitalizing. It is literally food for the soul. Not knowing what is around every corner is a discovery process that makes me feel alive. I always joke with my family and friends that I have chronic wanderlust. As adults, the repetitive nature of our jobs and responsibilities can weigh us down. But travel can allow us to have that much needed break from routine. I always know if a vacation has helped me reset because I feel lighter and like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. The return to every day life is met with positivity and a fresh outlook. This summer some of the simplest surprises have stuck with me – bike rides to dinner at sunset, discovering a hidden gem farmer’s market, and impromptu gelato breaks that never got tiresome!
Design elements that remind you of beloved places you’ve visited and made lasting memories are a great place to begin. Whether your momentos are large or small, exhibiting them in your home or outdoor space creates a daily reminder of something special to you. Traveling also helps me see certain aspects of home in a new light. We have beautiful sculptures and fountains around our neighborhood that I have taken time to appreciate with a new outlook.
Entertaining and sitting down to a beautiful meal is another great way to incorporate a little post-vacation inspiration at home. We often spot great accessories in restaurants or hotels we visit and want to bring them into our own home. Eating out is one of our favorite things to do while traveling. Neither my husband nor I have to cook, and there’s always a new spin on a seasonal dish that inspires us to try and copy the recipe upon our return. This helps us to keep our menu at home thoughtful and flavorful.
