Prepping for out-of-town guests

'Tis the season for welcoming friends and family from afar! After nearly two years of limited travel and gatherings, most of us are ready to fling open our homes and host out-of-town guests.  While I'm thrilled to have visitors once again, there's no denying that our guest room suffered a bit of neglect during the pandemic. The space collected more than dust, accumulating all sorts of random objects, clothing donations and a few unfinished projects. Thankfully, I had my mother-in-law's visit to spur me into action a few weeks ago. Our degenerate guest room re[...]

dressing the table: Tips for inspirational fall dining

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we hope to inspire you to get creative and have fun with one of the smaller (yet often overlooked) elements of holiday preparations: dressing the table. I'll admit that there are many times when I feel too busy or tired to even think about creating pretty place settings. Weeknights, in particular, can be tough as we scramble to eat dinner in between after-school activities, homework and the nightly routine.  However, on those occasions when I do put forth a little effort, I'm always pleasantly surprised by how much my da[...]

Fall floral arrangements for your thanksgiving celebrations

While you’re running through the grocery store for the third time the week before Thanksgiving (we will be, too!), you might have time to stop briefly at the flower counter and grab a few stems to spice up your home for the occasion. Whether it’s a beautiful centerpiece for your entry or buffet, or some thoughtfully placed votive-sized arrangements, it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to make a big impact. The arrangements we make in the video are fairly easy to compose, but still add elegance to any table or counter-top. Here are a few tips to keep in mind[...]

we know what guys want: the husband-approved gift guide you’ve been waiting for

Every holiday season, I'm at a loss when it comes to selecting gifts for the men in my life, particularly my husband who can be persnickety. Admittedly, I've had a few gift-giving fails over the years, such as the motorized tie rack and the "James Bond Weekender" bag that turned out to be just big enough to hold a tampon and a lipstick--but not at the same time. Whether you're the most confident gift-giver or you're like me and can relate to some holiday-induced self-doubt, our husband-approved gift guide is here to help. Farrah and I turned to our husbands, Harr[...]

MY love For Block print

A few years back when my husband and I were in the beginning stages of designing our home, I must have spent hours pouring over interior design books and magazines, trying to pinpoint the exact style we were going for and identify commonalities in the rooms that stopped me in my tracks. I realized that the spaces I'm most drawn to often incorporate hand-blocked, Indian textiles and wallpapers. While I 'm definitely not an expert, I don't think you have to be one in order to appreciate the international flair that block print materials add to a space. The traditio[...]

A crisp & refreshing cocktail for autumn celebrations

Sometimes it's best to keep things simple, especially when we're hosting and there are a million other things demanding our attention. This crisp and refreshing Autumn Apple Cider Mule is the easy cocktail we'll be mixing up throughout the fall season as it's equally  suitable for Halloween night and Thanksgiving celebrations. You could even multiply the ingredients and mix up a batch ahead of time. If so, just follow the instructions through step 3 and add the ginger beer and garnishes before serving. Cheers! AUTUMN APPLE CIDER MULE  Makes 2 servings[...]

A Must-have coffee table book for rattan lovers + WAYS TO BRING this timeless material into your home

Charleston, SC

Open any shelter magazine and you'll find bamboo, wicker and rattan furniture and accessories adding warmth and texture to homes of various styles and in locales ranging from mountains to beaches and everywhere in between. While rattan is certainly on trend, it’s also true that decorating with woven and natural materials has been en vogue for decades. My feelings about rattan as a mainstay in traditional decorating were reinforced by Lulu Lytle’s book Rattan A World of Elegance and Charm. I also came away feeling that I can confidently select “Rattan for $1,[...]

FAVORITE FALL FRAGRANCES

Of all the five senses, scent has the strongest link to memory and can conjure up feelings of nostalgia. To this day, the musky-sweet smell of fallen leaves takes me back to childhood autumns when crisp, fall days were meant for jumping in leaf piles and taking walks in the nearby woods. In addition to bringing back fond memories, fragrance is one of those little pleasures that enhances my mood. Wearing a beautiful perfume seems to elevate even the most mundane tasks and routines. Likewise, fragrances for the home create an atmosphere that I find particularly n[...]
