A Season to bloom: takeaways from the southern C Summit

Sea Island, GA
If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you may have seen that Lori and I ventured off for a little field trip to Sea Island, Georgia last week. We were thrilled to attend the Southern Coterie’s annual Summit conference at The Cloister, and can’t remember the last time we learned so much in three days! For more than a decade, the “Southern C” has provided a network for female creatives and entrepreneurs in the South and beyond. Founders Cheri Leavy and Whitney Long have done an amazing job bringing together a supportive community of women that value connection and collaboration.

The theme for this year’s Summit was “Bloom,” and the agenda was packed with speakers, mentor groups and networking opportunities aimed at helping attendees do just that. We enjoyed hearing from an impressive array of businesswomen and industry pioneers, including fashion icon Lela Rose and Charleston’s own Carrie Morey with Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. Speakers were refreshingly honest about the highs and lows of building a brand, social media, advertising and more. Suffice it to say that we came home full of ideas and inspiration for this little passion project of ours!

Along with gaining new insights and industry knowledge, we were inspired by meeting so many smart and talented women who are going after their dreams. Our time at Summit reinforced the notion that living joyfully requires us to push beyond our comfort zone.

It can be intimidating to begin something new and, unless you’re a professional gambler, taking risks is never comfortable. Personally, I’m setting out this year with some different goals than usual. I’m determined to take more chances, and bet on myself in the areas where I think I can succeed. It’s going to take a lot of learning, attempting and maybe even failing. I think that’s all part of the “blooming” process. I’ll keep reminding myself of what Moira Kucaba said in her Open Book conversation with Lori: the secret to joy and contentment is progress, not perfection.

Whatever it is that you’ve set your sights on, we hope you’re encouraged to wade beyond the comfort zone with us. Discomfort is temporary, but the benefit we stand to gain is immeasurable. Let’s get out there and do something for ourselves. Learn something new. Try something different. Finish this sentence – I’ve always wanted to…
