As a longtime admirer of James T. Farmer’s aesthetic, I happily added his newest book to my collection. Celebrating Home A Time For Every Season has got to be one of the prettiest entertaining books I’ve seen in a long time. Arranged by seasonal gatherings, each chapter begins with a lovely watercolor invitation and often a sentimental poem to mark the occasion. I found myself slowly turning the pages to take in the gorgeous photography.

Farmer’s entertaining philosophy perfectly aligns with our pursuit of joyful living at The Roost. A dinner party can be an opportunity to celebrate life’s joys, while creating an experience that delights the senses and bestows gracious hospitality. I loved learning about Farmer’s creative process and how he uses flowers and place settings to produce “a visual feast” for his guests. He introduces this concept with a favorite quote by the late Julia Reed.
“What I love about the South is that there is nothing too insignificant to celebrate, and if you’re really lucky you learn about grace and small joys, which are, after all, what make up big lives.” –Julia Reed
Whether it’s a milestone birthday or simply the changing seasons–Celebrating Home reminds us to embrace all of life’s special moments as gifts to be shared with family and friends. Farmer’s festive tablescapes coupled with his warm account of each celebration make the reader feel like a welcome guest! The only thing that would make it even better? I wish he’d included recipes with his featured menus. Regardless, I know this is one of those books that I’ll be returning to any time I’m craving a dose of beauty and inspiration. Cheers!
