On my recent trip to New York, I was thinking about how I travel and what items people deem “worthy” to make their trip better or more comfortable. I’ve pulled together my list of items that over the years I’ve realized really make a difference, plus a cool new find I spotted in NYC and couldn’t wait for Harry to try.
Airplanes are just plain uncomfortable! As a kid, I used to have butterflies of excitement for weeks before my flight. These days, I’m strategizing how I can get through it with the least amount of discomfort and distract myself for as long as possible.
- The Versillo travel pillow was invented by my darling neighbor right here in South Carolina. I immediately bought one several years ago to support her entrepreneurial spirit and fell in love with how useful the pillow is. It features an extra piece that somehow makes it more functional and I can actually sleep on transatlantic or cross-country flights.
- My mom loaned me her cashmere wrap this summer. I had never splurged and bought one for myself because I didn’t think it was worth the price tag. So I went on a hunt online to find a moderately priced version of her wrap. And I discovered Maison Cashmere. Not only is this wrap really beautiful, but it comes in 11 colors. The wrap functions as a scarf or a blanket on the plane if you’re cold. I’ve even used it in my hotel room at night when it’s too chilly.
- My Samsonite classic duffle carry- on is one of my all-time faves. Have you ever noticed the majority of women waiting to board a plane are carrying a giant tote bag that looks like it could dislocate their shoulder? Yes, me too! And the last thing I need when I’m heading out of town is an achey shoulder or back from carrying too much luggage. This bag has a horizontal strap along one side that allows you to hook it onto your carry on. That way you can eliminate any shoulder bags by tossing your purse in there as well. It’s made of nylon so it’s easy to wipe clean and it folds down flat so if you need it to disappear, no problem.
My husband Harry is a lovely guy for those of you who don’t know him. He’s not into fashion at all, but he likes to “look put together” while still feeling comfortable. I spotted these Oliver Cabell shoes online but didn’t pull the trigger on them until we discovered their only brick and mortar store in NYC. The shoes are basically great-looking, black leather low-tops made in Italy and designed for comfort. The versatility and comfort is the key for me because he can wear them to a nice restaurant or kicking around town.
I bought this Lulu Lemon crossbody bag on a trip this summer. Believe it or not this was my first Lulu purchase for myself. I needed a bag to carry the absolute essentials in while hiking. But because this bag is so small, you can carry it into concerts that have a bag policy and never take it off. It’s so light weight and thin that you can conceal it under a jacket while walking around town or traveling and eliminate any worry of misplacing your essentials.
I hope this list will give you comfort and ease in your travels. The Samsonite bag and the Oliver Cabell shoes are on sale so whether you want to get started on your Christmas shopping or you just want to plan ahead for your next drip, don’t miss out!
