For the longest time, I was a self-care skeptic. Apart from the occasional trip to the salon, I didn’t think I needed it. Self-care seemed like an indulgence for those who could afford to splurge on massages, facials, and afternoon naps. After my daughters were born, the little time I had for such frivolities whittled down to just enough to shower and brush my teeth.
So what’s changed? I guess growing older (and hopefully wiser) has me seeking opportunities to relax and recharge. Maybe it’s a way to combat the winter doldrums or a coping mechanism for what seems to be a never-ending pandemic. Either way, I’m pretty motivated to improve my health, in general. True self-care isn’t just about spa days. It involves tending to my emotional well-being, too. Sometimes being a bit selfish is what’s required. When I take better care of myself, I’m better able to care for my family.
If I hadn’t already arrived at this conclusion, a recent bout with omicron made me painfully aware that I’m little good to anyone when I’m unwell. It also reminded me just how much I love a hot bath. Instead of waiting until the next time I’m racked with chills and body aches to take a long soak, I’ve decided to make it a Sunday evening ritual to help set me up for the week. Below are some other ways I’m preserving my sanity and overall well-being this winter season and beyond:
- A non-negotiable morning routine – Starting the day with peace and solitude is critical to my mindset and helps me hit the ground running once the rest of the house wakes up. I’m filling this precious alone time with coffee, prayer and my new Rise Up planner.
- Going beyond cardio – I’ve finally realized that there’s more to fitness than burning calories, and am trying to include strength and flexibility training at least three days a week.
- Eating for fuel– Being diagnosed with anemia and an under-active thyroid has been a wake-up call. Instead of obsessing and fixating on a new “plan,” I’m simply trying to eat with nutrition in mind. I’m also incorporating a daily green juice and multi-vitamin, along with iron and magnesium supplements.
- Bi-monthly manicures + pedicures – This is one of those little treats that keeps me feeling less disheveled even when I’m schlepping around in sweats or workout clothes.
- A quarterly facial – A solid skincare regimen seems more critical than ever, and I’m opting to supplement my at-home efforts with a professional facial every three months or so.
- Reading before bed – Instead of falling asleep with the TV on, I’m reaching for a book to help my mind wander. Reading is becoming part of a nighttime routine that I look forward to throughout the day.
- Time with friends – Whether it’s getting together for lunch or a walk on the beach–the company of close friends is something I cherish. Living away from family has made these relationships even more important to me, and I feel blessed to have a group of special ladies in my life.
- Staying hydrated – Who isn’t trying to drink more water these days? Getting enough water is critical to staving off my afternoon sugar cravings and the migraines that can attack when I’m dehydrated.
- Daily phone calls with my mom and sister – Despite the physical distance between us, I talk to one or both of these women every day. Along with my husband, my mom and sister help keep me grounded and remind me what’s most important in life.
- Regular doctor and dentist appointments – Unfortunately my least favorite form of self-care is also one of the most important. Each January, I try to knock out or at least schedule health appointments for the year.
I’m always curious to learn what’s keeping others afloat, especially during the cold, winter months and a never-ending pandemic. How are you taking care of yourself these days? Are you a long-time, self-care devotee or is it a challenge to make time for yourself?
